Construction worker shortage weighs on hot U.S. housing market| Reuters

DENVER The drumbeat of hammers echoes most mornings through suburban Denver, where Jay Small, the owner of company that frames houses, is building about 1,300 new homes this year.

That's more than triple what he built a few years ago, when "you couldn't buy a job" in the residential construction industry, he said.

Now, builders can't buy enough workers to get the job done.

Eight years after the housing bust drove an estimated 30 percent of construction workers into new fields, homebuilders across the country are struggling to find workers at all levels of experience, according to the National Association of Homebuilders. The association estimates that there are approximately 200,000 unfilled construction jobs in the U.S. - a jump of 81 percent in the last two years.

The ratio of construction job openings to hiring, as measured by the Department of Labor, is at its highest level since 2007.

"The labor shortage is getting worse as demand is getting stronger," said John Courson, chief executive of the Home Builders Institute, a national nonprofit that trains workers in the construction field.

The impact is two-fold. Without enough workers, residential construction is trailing demand for homes, dampening the overall economy.

And with labor costs rising, homebuilders are building more expensive homes to maintain their margins, which means they are abandoning the starter home market. That has left entry-level homes in tight supply, shutting out many would-be buyers at a time when mortgage rates ar e near historic lows.

Nationwide, there are 17 percent fewer people working in construction than at the market peak, with some states - including Arizona, California, Georgia and Missouri - seeing declines of 20 percent or more, according to data from the Associated General Contractors of America.

The labor shortage is raising builders' costs - and workers' wages - and slowing down construction.

Small, the Denver builder, estimates that he could construct at least 10 percent more homes this year if he had enough workers. But he remains short-staffed, despite raising pay to levels above what he paid during the housing bubble a decade ago.

"It's getting to the point where you're really limited in what you can deliver," Small said. "We lost so many people in the crash, and we're just not getting them back."

HIGHER COSTS

The average construction cost of building a single family home is 13.7 percent higher now than in 2007, even as the total co sts of building and selling a house - a figure that includes such items as land costs, financing and marketing - are up just 2.9 percent over the same period, according to a survey by the National Association of Homebuilders.

The problem is accentuated by strong demand for newly constructed homes, with sales reaching a nine-year high in July.

Private companies say that they are having a hard time attracting workers, and they are often forced to give employees on-the-spot raises to prevent them from going to competitors. Carpenters and electricians are often listed as the most in-demand specialties.

Tony Rader, the vice president of Schwob Building Company, a general contractor in the Dallas area, said his company has started handing out flyers at sporting events, churches and schools in hopes of luring more people into the field.

"The biggest problem I face every day is where are we going to find the people to do the work," he said, adding that it's beco ming increasingly common for his company and others to turn down projects.

Dallas contractors are fighting over the limited supply of workers as three major mixed-use projects are going up right next to each other on the so-called "$5 billion mile" in Frisco, a northern suburb. Meanwhile, the metropolitan area is adding about 30,000 newly built homes annually.

With fewer workers, contractors are becoming wary of signing new work contracts, especially as many of them include fines for not completing a job by a designated date.

"I've got two lawsuits right now where it may cost us mid-six-figures because there's not enough labor out there to get it done," said one contractor in the North Dallas area who declined to be identified.

Lawyers in hot residential markets say that it is becoming increasingly common for construction companies to try to negotiate for more time.

"Subcontractors are having a hard time staffing up," said Edward Allen, a Denver attorney who said he has seen more Home Improvement College Station lawsuits over project delays in the past two years.

GUARANTEED WORK, FEW TAKERS

Colorado alone will need 30,000 more workers in the construction field in the next six years, a number that does not account for those who will retire, according to a study by the Association of General Contractors.

The state passed a bill last year pledging $10 million over three years to fund free training for plumbers, electricians and carpenters.

Yet Michael Smith, who heads a Denver-based nonprofit that administers the training, said that he can't fill the seats. High schools are focused on preparing students for college, ignoring those that may be better suited for vocational work. Students may be put off by construction's reputation as a dangerous, cyclical field, he said.

"We've so demonized http://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/remodeling/ working with your hands in this country," he said. "We've got a booming economy, and we can't keep up with the pace of growth."

Students who go through the four-week program are all but guaranteed a job paying $16 an hour or more immediately, with the possibility of commanding $80,000 or more in annual income after five years without taking on any student debt, he said.

On-the-job training is also a common path for new workers. Eduardo Salcido - a 25-year-old concrete finisher working at a 232-home Toll Brothers subdivision going up in the Denver suburb of Broomfield - said that he received on-site training after entering the construction field as a painter.

He has earned one raise since beginning the training two years ago and is now certified as a semi-skilled finisher.

"The money's not bad," he said.

Homebuilders are increasingly desperate to bring back in fully skil led laborers such as Greg Lewis, a 43-year old journeyman carpenter in St. Louis. After struggling to find work in 2010, Lewis started making leather goods at home and selling bags, belts and wallets online. He now operates his business fulltime under the name Made Supply Co.

Even though he's making less than he did in construction, Lewis is not tempted to go back into a field that is marked by job insecurity, he said. His former co-workers have gone on to work in warehouses or a local General Motors plant, and most are choosing not to return to their old jobs even as contractors offer higher wages.

"Guys couldn't wait around for their next job, and now they don't want to go back to a field that could turn on them," he said. "It's either hot or cold, and you just can't trust it."

9 Stunning Landscapes of Vietnam

At just three percent of the land mass of the United States, what most surprised me during our time in Vietnam was the diversity of the scenery. From white sand beaches and turquoise water to black rock forests and mountains that hug the clouds, here are some of the most amazing landscapes we came across.

With a coastline of over 2025 miles, it's no surprise that Vietnam has a ton of beautiful beaches. And when the rest stop during your bus trip looks like this, you don't have much to complain about.

rest stops in Vietnam are sometimes on beautiful beaches

The biggest beach destination in Vietnam is likely the town of Nha Trang, which boasts all day boat tours and all night parties. If you're missing Miami while in SE Asia, this is the closest we found. The beach in the main town is pretty nice, but the offshore islands are where you want to head if you're looking to snorkel or dive. With perfect visibility, good quality coral, and thousands of multicolored fish flitting about, having a great day is easy, especially since the all day island-hopping tour costs approximately $6.

But Vietnam's coastline isn't all sparkling white sand and clear blue water. Our favorite coastal landscape was the sand dunes around Mui Ne, which come in both red and white varieties. Whether you jump, run, or slide, it's hard not to let the beauty of the dunes overwhelm you. Stretching for what seems like miles, the dunes are something you'd expect to find in Africa. Instead, they're here, only a few minutes away from one of the best places in the world to learn to kitesurf.

Most countries with a coastline have beaches, but they don't all have rice terraces, especially ones that look like this.

rice terraces of Sapa

The terraces in Sapa were carved over two thousand years ago by hand and are still inhabited primarily by the Black Hmong tribespeople. These mountain dwellers live off the land, planting and harvesting rice year in and year out in order to sustain their families.

a Black Hmong man takes a break from working in the rice terraces outside of Sapa

Tourists can explore the terraces by taking a multiday trekking tour with a Hmong guide. You'll stay in homestays run by the local villagers, get http://www.kmart.com/lawn-garden-watering-hoses-sprinklers/b-24499 knee deep in mud, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRbW3ayDWVQ appreciate rice way more than you ever have.

Wide view of Sapa's rice terraces

Further north and to the east of Sapa lies the unexplored Vietnam of the Ha Giang province. You need a permit to stay the night and a camera with lots of battery power to take all of the photos of the immense scenery that surrounds you as you drive by on your motorbike. The most beautiful part of the road, and arguably one of the most beautiful drives in the world, is the leg between Dong Van and Meo Vac. Here the road darts in and out of rock crevices and up and down mountains and valleys.

Windy road in Northern Vietnam

Children in traditional tribal outfits scream "hello" from above and below as they carry double their weight of sticks in bamboo baskets. Men wear high-necked black tunics and matching berets and women wrap electric pink scarves over their hair, giving the game of "I Spot" a whole new meaning.

Rock forest in Northern Vietnam

Perhaps the most quintessential scene of Vietnam is the floating limestone karst formations of Halong Bay. Best seen on a multi-day boat tour, these rocks rise out of the still water and emerge through the mist forming, if you look hard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRbW3ayDWVQ enough, the shape of a descending dragon. At least that's what the locals tell you, and how Halong Bay gets its name. Kayaking through some of these formations is a must, as is sitting back on your boat tour and letting the scenery and mist envelop you.

Inside Grey Gardens - CBS News

The wood-shingled summer house is considered quaint by today's East Hampton standards, but it was a proper mansion when it was built in 1897.

An immaculate garden bloomed out back, surrounded by walls imported from Spain sheltering it from the grey, stormy winds of eastern Long Island.

But the home's http://bloomingdesert.com/ reputation came not from its grey garden, but from its eccentric inhabitants.

Had they been nobodies, perhaps Albert and David Maysles never would have shown up to make their 1975 documentary, "Grey Gardens."

But Big Edie and Little Edie WERE somebodies. They were the black sheep of the Bouvier family, aunt and cousin to none other than Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
< br>Phelan Beale, a wealthy lawyer, had bought the home for his wife in 1923. Back then their lives were full of high society must-haves -- country clubs, debutante balls and the like.

But when Beale divorced his wife, Little Edie came home to take care of her mother, and for the next 40-some years, their lives (and the house) unraveled together.

Little Edie: "Any little rat hole, even on 10th Avenue, I would like better."

The film finds the duo living in a single room, eating liver pate and ice cream, surrounded by trash, cats, and other wildlife, including raccoons living in the walls which they fed like pets.

It was big news when the country Board of Health tried to evict them, but the ladies of Grey Gardens refused to leave.

Rallies against Islamic law draw counter-protests across US

SEATTLE - Small but disorderly protests around the country Saturday raised the worry that extremist interpretations of Islamic law somehow might swell across the U.S. and infect American democracy, but many of the rallies drew even more over-the-top counter-protests by demonstrators who called such fears an unfounded distortion of Islam.

Hundreds of counter-protesters marched through downtown Seattle, banging drums, cymbals and cowbells behind a large sign saying "Seattle stands with our Muslim neighbors." Participants chanted "No hate, no fear, Muslims are welcome here" on their way to City Hall, where dozens of anti-Shariah protesters rallied.

A phalanx https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx5hfLp3Vqc of bicycle police officers kept the sides separated during the sanctioned events, but authorities said a large fight broke out after the gatherings concluded.Seattle police used tear gas to disperse rowdy demonstrators and made several arrests following an anti-Shariah rally and a much larger counter-protest. The department said it was still reviewing how many people were arrested and what charges they might face, but at least some were expected to be booked for investigation of assault.

In front of the Trump building in downtown Chicago, about 30 people demonstrated against Islamic law and in favor of President Donald Trump, shouting slogans and holding signs that read "Ban Sharia" and "Sharia abuses women." About twice as many counter-protesters marshaled across the street.

A similar scene played out in a park near a New York courthouse, where counter-protesters sounded air-horns and banged pots and pans in an effort to silence an anti-Shariah rally. In St. Paul, Minnesota, state troopers arrested about seven people when scuffles broke out at the close of competing demonstrations at the state Capitol.

"The theme of today is drowning out racism," said New York counter-protest er Tony Murphy, standing next to demonstrators with colorful earplugs. "The more racists get a platform, the more people get attacked."

The rallies, held in more than two dozen U.S. cities, were organized by ACT for America, which claims Islamic law is incompatible with Western democracy.

The organization said it opposes discrimination and supports the rights of those subject to Shariah. However, the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, calls it the largest American anti-Muslim group.

"I don't believe Islam can peacefully co-exist with the Constitution," said Seattle anti-Shariah demonstrator Aaron Bassford, 29. "We need unity in this country under no ideology and no banner except the Constitution of the United States of America."

But the overwhelming majority of Muslims don't want to replace U.S. law with Islamic law, known as Shariah, and only "radical extremist groups" would call for that, said Liyakat Takim, a professor of Islamic st udies at McMaster University in the Canadian city of Hamilton, Ontario.

Shariah, Takim said, refers to guidelines or principles -- how Muslims should live. "Fiqh" refers to jurisprudence, or specific laws. The values embedded in Shariah do not change and are shared among Muslims, he said, while fiqh is open to interpretation and change, and in fact differs among Islamic sects and communities.

"The Quran allows slavery. So does the Old Testament. That doesn't mean we allow it today, too," Takim said. "Laws are amenable to change."

In Seattle, activists set up an "Ask an American Muslim" booth to give rally participants on either side a chance to speak with a Muslim.

"American Muslims support the American values and freedoms we all cherish," said Arsalan Bukhari, executive director of the state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The marches come amid a rise in reports of anti-Muslim incidents in the U.S., including arson attacks an d vandalism at mosques, harassment of women wearing Muslim head coverings and http://members.calbar.ca.gov/search/member.aspx bullying of Muslim schoolchildren.

In California, small but raucous demonstrations were held in a handful of cities, including San Bernardino, where a husband and wife inspired by the Islamic State group killed 14 people and wounded 22 in a 2015 shooting attack.

Clusters of protesters and counter-protesters gathered on four corners of an intersection at a memorial to the slain, yelling and waving American flags and posters proclaiming various causes. Anti-Islamic law demonstrators marched past the building where the shootings occurred.

"There's an anti-Trump, a pro-Trump, anti-extremists, so there are a variety of messages here," San Bernardino police spokeswoman Eileen H ards said. "There are so many messages going on that I'm not sure who's who."

Anti-Islamic law protester Denise Zamora, 39, said she and others in her group were not opposed to all Muslims.

"We're anti-Shariah. We're anti-radicals," the Upland woman said. She added, of Shariah: "It's coming in very slowly, and a lot of the refugees are bringing that ideology here. All of it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx5hfLp3Vqc just barbaric."

About 300 people attended San Bernardino's rallie s. Three were arrested on suspicion of vandalism for smashing windows of two cars, Hards said.

Trivia

Like several horror films of the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s, one of the major themes of this film is the mental trauma of the Vietnam War that is re-lived and dreamt of by its protagonist. This can largely be attributed to the recognition of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in 1980 by the American Psychiatric Association and an increased popular understanding throughout those decades of PTSD symptoms, e.g. nightmares, flashbacks, etc., as well as http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0207645/ an increasing number of Vietnam veterans who committed suicide as a result of their wartime experiences. Thus in many ways, films like House reflect a change in national consciousness as war ceased being depicted as a glorious event and began to be seen as a harrowing and traumatic e xperience. Penny Floor By Ryan Lange And Emily Belden Uses 59,670 Coins (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

A penny saved is a penny earned, as the saying goes. And there's no way to make sure you're not spending those coins quite like... gluing them to your floor.

Chicago couple Ryan Lange and Emily Belden have created a penny floor by fastening 59,670 pennies to their 234-square-foot bedroom floor, creating a space that not only looks cool but we imagine also feels nice on bare feet.

According to NBC, the duo wanted to renovate their bedroom, and the idea came to Lange after seeing a jar of change in their home and researching blogs. "We'd been looking up options and were thinking about being green when I said we should just tile the floor in pennies," Lange told the news corp.

So just how did they complete this project? At first the two used small glue tubes Best Remodeling Company In Houston and dotted spots of the adhesive on the floor, pushing each penny into place. But they quickly started using a caulk gun and stronger glue, which moved the process along immensely. They finished by placing one silver penny into the mix and then cemented the coins with a clear coat -- all in all it took 128 hours.

The handling of thousands of pennies may have left the couple tired and their hands dirty, but throughout the process they found rare gems like one coin from 1873 with an Indian head instead of Abraham Lincoln.

"It's unreal to own an artifact Best Remodeling that old, let alone wa ke up and walk on it every day," Belden told the Chicagoist. "We also fell in love with the variation in color among the pennies. Some are bright and shiny. Others are weathered with a unique teal hue to them. Some are dark and antiqued."

Penny floors have become more and more popular and trendy. This design idea can be seen at The Standard Grill in The Standard Hotel New York, Artistan Tattoo Gallery in Garfield, Pennsylvania and plenty of blogs and YouTube videos. And although it's not a new idea, we never get tired of hearing the awesome stories from people who take a chance with this DIY project.

Prison Gardens Grow New Lives for Inmates

ABC News' Bill Ritter reports:

From Enfield, Conn., to New York City and the San Francisco Bay, lush gardens filled with ripe fruits, vegetables and flowers are growing in unexpected places - prison yards.

Prisons use them to rehabilitate inmates and to teach them basic landscaping skills that they can use to get jobs. All of the prisoners involved in each garden's program are eligible for release.

Bernard, 46, who's been in trouble with the law a bout 10 times in the last 30 years, now helps in the gardening efforts at the Willard Cybulski Correctional Institution in Enfield, Conn.

"I get a sense of peace and a sense of serenity being that I'm in a hostile environment at times and then coming out here to pick these vegetables. It brings calmness to me," Bernard said.

For the last three years, all 18 state prisons in Connecticut have had garden programs. None cost taxpayers money.

Last year, Connecticut prisons produced more than 35,000 pounds of produce - saving taxpayers $20,000 a year by putting produce back into the prison system. Additional food is donated to charities.

"We give 25 percent of what we pick back to the community and that's the most fulfilling thing, that I'm helping someone, because in my life I have taken in trouble so, to me, it's almost like paying back a debt http://www.youtube.com/user/HunterIrrigationProd to be able to pick something and be able to give back to others," Bernard said.

"We https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRbW3ayDWVQ believe that everybody has a heart and everybody has a chance for transformation," said Beth Waitkus, the director of the Insight Garden Program that started 10 years ago at San Quentin prison. "What happens with gardening is ... they reconnect to themselves. They reconnect to their feelings. They reconnect to each other as a community, a small community https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRbW3ayDWVQ in the prison, and they really reconnect to nature. And, I think that offers a huge opportunity for transformation when we reconnect to ourselves and to the natural world."
"I've been in and out since I've been 15 and this is the first time I've done something like this. I can connect spiritually with something as simple as garden. ... To me that was different," said Rasheed, who has already served two years and has six years left on his term.

While Waitkus spends her time in San Quentin teaching inmates how to plant flowers, take care of soil and prune plants, she also keeps the connection strong once they leave prison. Nationally, the recidivism rate is more than 60 percent, according to the 2011 Annual Recidivism Report.

For garden prisoners at San Quentin, Waitkus said the return rate is less than 10 percent, and most other prison gardens report return rates in the single digits. In Connecticut, officials say not one of the garden graduates has returned.

"The garden program to me in San Quentin was really therape utic because it breaks up the monotony of everyday life in prison and I also used to watch my mom garden, so it kind of brought me back to when I was a child, and it's just a real calming effect in a real, not normal place," said Kevin Williams who has been out of prison since 2012.

He now works for a group called Planting Justice, which gets jobs for released prisoners who have gone through the garden project at San Quentin.

"It feels great. And even when I was inside, people would ask me, 'Kev, why do you seem so happy all the time?' [It was] because you know, we're blessed. We've got another chance to go home and get it right," he said.

"What we're trying to do here is to bring people together, find their inner gardener. If they're successful and not committing crimes, we are indeed creating a safer, more humane society," Waitkus said.
